School Description:

Burlington College is an independent, progressive, liberal arts institution that emphasizes the dynamic relationship between education and experience and integrates learning, personal development, and community engagement. The College prepares students to become skillful and reflective practitioners, lifelong learners, and active citizens engaged in fostering a just, humane society and sustainable, beautiful communities.

The College offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in various liberal arts majors and allows students to design their own individualized major, both on campus and through independent study. The Film School and the Fine Arts, Photography and Writing and Literature majors provide an emphasis on creativity, while the social science majors, enriched by The Institute for Civic Engagement, prepare students for careers in human services, psychology, government and the fields of law or politics. The Inter-American Studies major, offering a semester of study in Cuba and spring break in the Bahamas, along with other study-abroad opportunities, provide an international flavor to this small independent college. Liberal Studies and Film Studies, Associate of Arts degrees, and four certificate programs - documentary filmmaking, film production, screenwriting and paralegal studies are offered. The College's non-graded evaluation system requires students and professors to reflect upon what has been learned in the context of each course's central goals, empowering students to assess their own education, rather than passively wait for grades.
